Project Review: School of Music, Iowa University, USA | Laminated Glass Acoustic

The University of Iowa School of Music, a part of the Division of Performing Arts of the College of Liberal Art & Sciences, is a highly renowned music school with many notable faculty and alumni. The school trains musicians for professional careers in performance, composition, music therapy, music theory, musicology, conducting, and music education.

School of Music, also known as Voxman Music Building (named after the former Director Himie Voxman), was completed in 2017 by LMN Architects, an American architecture firm, covering an area of over 180,000 ft2 (about 17,000 m2). The infrastructure is so complete that students have full access to a 700-seat concert hall, group and individual rehearsal spaces, classrooms, and more.

In cooperation with AWS Cladding, one of the leading specialist contractors in the world, Togen participated in the building of the exterior façade wall of School of Music, Iowa University. The architect, full of amazing imagination, decided to applied a special kind of "twisted terracotta panel" to the façade wall. Moreover, these terracotta panels were expected to twist in two different directions: left and right, with rigorous standard for accuracy and shape, which further increased the difficulty in manufacturing.

Despite all the challenges, Togen became the one and only company in China succeeding in making this“twisted terracotta panel”with their technical-know-how of manufacturing and strong service of customization. The“twisted terracotta panel”offered by Togen was well received by the clients, and improved the artistic value of the building just as the architect had planned.
